Imaginan un motor de búsqueda social, es la idea que tiene el creador de Wikipedia Jimmy Wales, quien hará un esfuerzo por competir con el gigante de la búsqueda Google.
Es claro que la idea nace del éxito que tiene Wikipedia como enciclopedia social, pero será posible replicar este modelo en un buscador. Al parecer Wales esta decidido.
Pero que implica hacer un buscador social, básicamente la idea es hacer que cada usuario utilice los recursos de su computador para rastrear una parte de la Web, generar un índice y tenerlo disponible para que cualquier usuario pueda hacer una búsqueda en el índice que el primero generó.
Para generar el índice se utilizará Nutch un buscador Web basado en Lucene ambos soportados por Apache y como es de esperarse opensource, pero una vez que tenga creado el índice como poder buscar en todos los índices generados alrededor del mundo, para esto Wales ya dio el primer paso adquiriendo Grubby un software también opensource, primera iniciativa de crear un buscador distribuido, que permite la comunicación P2P basado en el protocolo XMPP, el mismo estándar abierto que utiliza Google para su servicio de mensajería instantánea.
El beneficio que vislumbra Wales es poder tener un buscador de gran calidad disponible para que lo puedas adherir a tus proyectos Web dándole el poder de un buscador de primer nivel.
